Another Competitor To League Of Legends Emerges – SMITE
The ever increasing popular MOBA genre is soon to have yet another title added to the repertoire in the form of Hi-Rez Studios’ SMITE. A couple of years ago MOBA wasn’t even a genre but now it seems like a new one is being released every week. Recently Realm of the Titans was launched by Aeria Games, and now the developers of Tribes: Ascend are having a stab with their latest MMO title, SMITE.
Nobody will argue that League of Legends is currently the dominant force in the MOBA genre and with Riot recently announcing a huge graphical update for the game, the throne seems like a comfortable place for LoL. The closed beta for SMITE will begin at the end of this month and will feature 5 free gods at launch, as well as 10 premium gods available through the starter package.
It’s a bit early to call doom and gloom, especially as the public have yet to test the game, but already offering double the amount of premium characters compared to free ones does not seem like a good idea. There’s more than just game mechanics to League of Legends’ success. You can play through the entire game and never spend a dime, and many players say it’s one of the most appealing aspects to the game. SMITE appears to be offering a pay to win approach, limiting free players to such a small choice. I could be way off base here but if any MOBA title wants to challenge the currently dominant League of Legends, they’re going to need to launch with more than 5 playable characters.
