Bigpoint Announce Fantastic New MMORPG Game, Ice Age Online…Really? REALLY?
Bigpoint are no strangers to creating games based on popular IP’s as they’ve managed to make a success of Battlestar Galactica Online and The Mummy didn’t do too bad, not forgetting the recently announced Game of Thrones, but can they really make something of Ice Age Online?
Based on the hugely popular Ice Age movies, a franchise that has earned over $4 billion, the game definitely has a fan base but can Bigpoint convert the cinema-going crowd to the world of the MMO?
“We’re excited to have fans of Ice Age jump into the open beta,” said Julia Salomon, Producer, Bigpoint. “Our team is dedicated to delivering an authentic online gaming experience that is true to the cinematic adventures of Sid, Manny Diego, and Scrat – and we’re confident that fans will be entertained by Ice Age Online.”
The game is already available to play, having just begun open beta testing. Players take on the role of a sloth that gets separated from his herd. To survive players must locate other lost herd members and build small camps to aid their survival. The game play itself resembles other popular side-scrolling run-n-jump games, but with a unique Ice Age twist of collecting acorns. There are a few different game modes available and players can expect to explore a large selection of areas from the Grassy Plans to the Chilly Glacier, all based on familiar settings from the movie.
Using the popular Unity 3D engine, Ice Age Online is a free to play browser title that is compatible with the majority of modern internet browsers. Launching worldwide and already available in 10 different languages, Ice Age Online has all it needs to bring the big chill to the MMO audience, but can it survive this cut-throat part of the gaming industry? What are your thoughts?
