Diablo Living Large while WoW slips
According to a recent update on sales by Activision Blizzard, Diablo 3 has sold over 10 million copies since it came out on May 15th. This put it far beyond of the rest of PC games this year in the race to the best, as 10 million units cements it as the best-selling PC game this year.
On the flip side of this coin, Blizzard’s other massive juggernaut of a game World of Warcraft has dipped in subscribers since last quarter. Q3 of 2011 had the game supporting 10.2 million paying players, and that number has slipped to only 9.1 million now. Blizzard made sure to note a large portion of the lost players came from Asian territories. Maybe this had to do with the crackdown on Asian gold farming that supposedly happened.
Even though Diablo 3 has sold very well, it’s clear that Activision Blizzard needs a kick in the rear as they are reporting a 45 percent loss in revenue over the past year. The company claimed 1.15 billion in the second quarter of 2011, and has since slipped to only 1.08 billion in 2012.
A huge chunk of the reported revenue comes from digital means, as 343 million was acquired in this way (reported as 32% of revenue).
