Edgeworld
Edgeworld is a free to play, sci-fi game that combines mechanics from both the MMORPG and MMORTS genres to deliver a unique, futuristic experience that lets you explore an alien planet directly in your browser. The year is 2711, humanity has formed the Galactic Union in an attempt to colonize alien planets and protect the future of mankind. Cerulea IV appeared to be a perfect destination, sharing many qualities with the human home planet of Earth. The celebrations were cut short as the original inhabitants of Cerulea, the Ceruleans, vanished without a trace. What followed was a war of galactic proportions as the Galactic Union split apart into several hostile factions. Your role as a commander is to build your base, raise a huge army and gain control of Cerulea to harvest the rare resources and achieve planet-wide domination.
Edgeworld Review
Similar to other MMORTS games, Edgeworld features an in-depth base construction system. Your base is the headquarters for all of your military operations, as such you will need to construct vital buildings such as a Barracks, Command Center and Warp Gate. Your base is also the area where you construct your resource harvesting buildings, these are vital to your survival and must be protected at all costs. The world of Cerulea is not a safe place, and you can be attacked by both enemy players and NPC’s at almost anytime. In order to survive you will need to train a vast army of units, combining both human and alien technology. There’s a huge variety of units available, from genetically modified human super solders to alien rhinos that decimated your enemies with vicious attacks. In order to defend and attack successfully, you will need to combine a large variety of the units in order to be able to adapt to any situation.
The most appealing aspect to Edgeworld is the combat. If you’re familiar with MMORTS games, you’re probably aware that the majority of them feature combat scenarios that focus on rock-paper-scissors combat without any animations or serious input from players. Edgeworld blows the RTS genre away with its unique approach to combat, offering players highly tactical and strategic game-play on both the offensive and defensive sides of battle. When you’re attacking an enemy base you can choose which direction your units attack from, summoning hundreds of troops to attack your enemy from every angle. As you can see your enemies base before you attack, you must take into account the placement of their important buildings, turrets and Command Center. Certain units are more proficient against specific turrets while others are designed to destroy buildings, careful placement of your units will ensure a swift victory. Defending your base works in a similar way. Your enemies, including both NPCs and players, are able to summon their units to any area around your base. In order to survive you must place your turrets in defensive positions, ensuring that no area of your base is out of range of your defenses.
Any fans of the MMORTS genre have to give Edgeworld a try. The high-quality graphics, sounds and animations, combined with the awesomely intense combat, make it one of the most exciting strategy games available online.
Edgeworld,
buggy releases and overly balanced in favour of paying customers – don’t go here if you dont’ want to spend cash to “win”
