Golden Age
Good: The most innovative aspects of Golden Age are easily the games best features. The ability to have a custom avatar and explore the side-scrolling town is unique among current browser-based strategy games and the highly exciting dungeon system creates far more combat opportunities than usually found in the MMORTS genre.
Bad: Although Golden Age has a number of features that separate it from other strategy games, fundamentally it still features very similar mechanics to those found in other strategy titles such as Travian.
Golden Age is a free to play, browser-based strategy game from the hugely popular MMORPG publishers, Aeria Games. Featuring over 30 million active players, Aeria Games hosts a number of successful titles and has recently added the innovative MMORTS, Golden Age, to its ever expanding arsenal. Golden Age offers all of the features you would expect from a successful MMORTS game, such as base construction, unit and resource management and a number of unique features that separate it from the hundreds of other titles in the same genre.
Golden Age Review
Golden Age features a typical resource collection and management system that you would find in the majority of browser-based strategy games. You must construct various buildings to obtain resources such as Farms, Lumberyards and Mines. Each building collects a different resource so you need to balance your buildings carefully to avoid shortage. As well as being used in various building projects, resources are also required to recruit and train your army. Golden Age uses a unique two-step system to train your unstoppable army, firstly you must attract untrained citizens to your army office, then you’re able to view their stats and abilities before training them to become a specific type of unit. It can be slightly overwhelming at first but it does offer far more freedom compared to other games in the same genre.
One of the most discussed features of Golden Age is the avatar and side-scrolling town system. Your avatar represents the leader of your city and can be customized during character creation using a variety of different hair and face styles. Once you’ve completed creating your character you will enter the RPG-like town. The side-scrolling towns borrow many features from popular MMORPG Games such as allowing you to purchase a variety of items or collect quests. This makes a very nice change to typical auto-collecting quests found in the majority of strategy titles, making Golden Age one of the most appealing MMORTS titles available.
Overall Golden Age is everything every other strategy game hopes to be, and then some. Not only does it offer the core mechanics and features of a successful strategy game, it also adds a number of unique features such as the innovative dungeon mechanic and the highly popular side-scrolling towns. A must play MMORTS title for fans of the Golden Age era or strategy titles themselves.
