Hottest 2012 eSport ticket is League of Legends – now carrying 5 Million Dollar Purse
Hey, League of Legenders! Sharpen your kill Kits, someones about to get ganked!
What new eSport united more than 2 million viewers by keeping them glued to a live circuit event in 2011? What eSport is offering the largest purse in history of 5 million in prize pool money for their “eSports” tournament? No, it wasn’t anything on ESPN, even though it had a bigger audience than a Major League Baseball game on said network, it was…wait for it… League of Legends!?
League has a new role – making eSports span a multi-genre viewer base by having tournaments all over the world with a soaring fanbase.
Riot Games used the strategy of League of Legends as a sport to boost popularity by allowing players to be viewed ala’ Hunger Games style in Spectator Mode. The live-stream of player’s matches is jumping on the Pay-Per-View sports bandwagon and of course some online outlets are starting to charge fees.

With this past February’s event, League of Legends was the most streamed game in 2012. Not just anyone can jump on the fast track of Gatorade and Fruit of the Loom endorsements; you will need to qualify to be on one of the 12 teams that will compete in the 3 million dollar League of Legends Season 2 World Championship Tournament in Los Angeles this year
Qualifying includes:
- You have to have a qualifying ELO score from the opponent matchmaking process (check)
- You need the ability to access quite a few Champions (check)
- It’s a time commitment (check)
- It involves working on a team (hmmm…not so much)
My pretties, it’s time to smack down some Champions and their little Super Minions too!
