Microsoft Blunder “We own Donkey Kong right?”
A former Rare employee Chris Seavor, who also too the lead on Conker’s Bad Furt Day, responded to a Twitter message recently, saying that Microsoft thought they got more than they paid for with the acquisition of RARE.
He went on to relive the scenario where a group of Microsoft Executives visited the RARE studios shortly after the purchase. One of them noticed a large Donkey Kong poster on the wall and responded with:
“Hey that’s great.. We own Donkey Kong right??”
So the Executives in attendance were so aware of the industry, the famous IPs and those owned by RARE that they completely forgot Donkey Kong is, and has always been, a Nintendo IP. The acquisition of RARE wasn’t the smoothest purchase in Microsoft’s history as another former RARE employee also expressed his concerns stating that there was a “severe cultural clash” between the two companies; suggesting that Microsoft took more and more control as time passed.
