Pirate101 is an upcoming pirate-themed MMORPG Game published and developed by KingsIsle, the same development team that brought you the highly popular Wizard101. When you hear pirate-themed MMO, you’d probably expect vast oceans and unexplored islands, but not in Pirate101. Pirate101 uses a unique design that gives players their own personal airship, a unique form of travel unlocking a whole new era for the pirate MMORPG genre.

Pirate101 uses a similar cartoon style art design and architecture to Wizard101, creating an attractive graphics system that appeals to players of all ages. Although the game is currently unavailable, a closed beta is expected to begin soon. There are a few features that have been announced, although they’ve probably saved some of the more exciting aspects of the game until a later announcement.
Similar to Wizard101, Pirate101 has one of the most unique combat systems seen in today’s MMORPG Games. It’s turn-based, which is usually something that puts players off, but it delivers depth and strategy that a typical real-time combat system cannot deliver. Players take it in turns to use spells and abilities, and the majority of both are connected to some really high-quality animations. The combat isn’t just restricted to land-lovers, aerial combat is also available thanks to the flying pirate ships. You will be able to build and modify your own pirate ship, from choosing the crew that helps fly it, to the image flying off the mast, it’s totally up to you.
One of the best aspects to Pirate101 is the fantasy setting, stepping away from the typical medieval approach that we see in so many of today’s MMORPG titles. Players can expect to encounter dozens of monster types, from vicious sharks to the eery undead, with all enemies having a unique set of powers and abilities. The uniqueness of each enemy monster helps to increase the depth of the combat system, with certain enemies being weak against a particular element. This allows observant players to be much more efficient in combat, rewarding them with faster experience points and more items.
Wizard101 hit the MMO world by storm and there’s no reason why Pirate101 can’t do the same. Expect this title to be one of the best free to play releases heading to PC’s this year.
