Resident Evil Blamed For UK Murder
A UK based newspaper published in Norfolk has blamed the torturing and murder of a man on the popular survival horror franchise, Resident Evil. Derek Blake, aged 44, was discovered in a bath of water in a flat in Great Yarmouth on May 24th. Ricky Roys, 20, Andrew Brown, 42, and Helen Cooke, 19, all pleaded guilty to murder and each will serve a minimum of 18 years.
A pathologist discovered that the victim had suffered over 104 separate injuries and wounds, prompting the pathologist to label it a “painful and humiliating” ordeal. The comparison to the Resident Evil games came from one of the killers as he compared the alcohol driven attack to the graphic video-games. The attack included horrible acts of mutilation such as pouring boiling water on the victim and inflicting cuts and burns all over his body. The letter “J” was also carved into the side of his face.
Judge Peter Jacobs said:
“This was a murder involving sadistic conduct. This went far beyond a punishment beating and the infliction of this many injuries confirms you intended to kill him.
Prosecutor Graham Parkin had earlier told the court:
“A claw hammer, a boning knife and another knife were found in the flat and these had been used in the attack. Mr Blake may have survived for some hours after the attack. He would have been conscious for much of that and would have been in extreme pain. Acts of torture took place – sadistic acts.”
A horrible story, without a doubt. But where exactly does Resident Evil fit in? I don’t recall much of this from any of the games. Maybe a person more knowledgeable in the franchise can fill me in?
Pretty much has nothing to do with Resident Evil at all actually. None of the torture methods fit anywhere in the franchise, and I’ve played every single RE game.
Same conclusion I came to. Strange that the story is even related to be honest.
Blame a main stream game other than the real issue. Typical.
Sounds more like Manhunt than RE6, what newspaper was it? I’d like to write a complaint to editor about bad journalism.
The media likes to blame other media, be it music, film or games, Manson is to blame for this, child’s play is to blame for that, it’s all utter crap, this is just 3 men who killed without motivation, it’s as simple as that.
What a load of Tosh!
I also have played every RE ever made (including 6) and there is nothing remotely like the described above in any of the games.
Sounds more like something out of a horror movie.
I feel sorry for the poor victim, Certainly no way to go but I wish people would stop blaming games (and other forms of media for that matter) for the bad conduct and utter stupidity of people who are obviously tapped in the head.
that is just crazy how those sadistic could do such a thing.
yes I will blame Resident Evil too.
all these fools will never realise the “truth”.
just because you play COD and you don’t go around shooting people, DOESN’T mean it isn’t affecting you.
it doesn, it infects your mind and spirit.
you think if you don’t burst in a fits of rage, you wouldn’t copy the same thing you saw on tv?
there’s a whole lot to be side about this thing, and a whole lot to be explained.
if I start explaining, people will be confused and would not even believe.
So wait, you’re using the “I have an argument but I’m not going to post it because nobody will believe me” defence? Lol.
To be honest, I disagree with what you’ve said. Despite being a gamer for the majority of my life, I have never enacted events depicted in the games I play, regardless of how angry I have become. Why is it nobody ever blames books for this sort of thing? It’s always games games games games, games are bad, games cause murders, games are poison. How about we blame the individuals who enact the events, rather than the games that may or may not have been used as an influence (or scapegoat)?
I won’t argue that videogames don’t have an effect on your mind, and even your body. However, I’m of the opinion that they don’t twist normal, run-of-the-mill people into murderers. That’s gotta be in you already.
With regards to this story, it has nothing to do with Resident Evil. As Anonymous stated, these events do not take place in any Resident Evil game. There is a slightly similar activity displayed in the Resident Evil novel Caliban Cove, but that’s where the similarity ends. This appears to be just another media campaign to hate for the sake of hating, and to turn people who don’t know about gaming against it.
Can you please explain anyway? It would really help the rest of us, and it would help you convince the rest of us of the legitimacy of of your statements.
No Xino,
I can hand on heart say that when I am angry I have never thought of releaseing the T virus (or something else) upon the world.
Why?
Because I have gotten mad numerous times and I have never killed anyone and more to the point to my knowledge the T virus does not actually exist (I hope.)
I have played 1000′s of “mature” games, Watched 1000′s of films and read some horific stories but I still know the difference between right and wrong.
I still have my humanity, emotions and morals.
Yes these things will effect people, Most people marginally but people who are effected strongly are weak minded and “ill” in the head t start with.
Well said, Andy. Xino is clueless. The people who commited this awful crime obviously have a few screws loose and to blame video games, movies, music etc. is just plain ignorant.
Now that’s weird. Pretty much nothing to do with the franchise…
