Skylancer
Skylancer is a free to play MMORTS game that adds a unique twist to the MMORTS genre, giving players control over a flying island, instead of the typical colony or outpost approach. Skylancer includes a large array of exciting features, such as managing and expanding your own floating island, three different factions to progress through and a highly colorful user-interface that makes questing and other aspects of the game, very easy to learn.
Although Skylancer includes many features you would expect to find in a MMORTS game, they’re all packaged in a totally different way. You’re not the commander of a static colony or outpost, instead you’re the captain of your very own floating island. This is where the game really separates itself from other RTS titles as your floating island is always on screen, whether you’re constructing buildings on your island, or exploring the world map. Exploring the world map isn’t as simple as sending a bunch of units to their doom by clicking an enemy base, instead you must rotate the world with your mouse, exploring with your island as you go. There are a number of objects you’ll be able to interact with as you explore the world map, such as pirate ships, resource nodes and quest objectives.
The combat in Skylancer is also quite unique, offering players both strategic choices and high quality graphics. You can create your army from a large variety of units, and then assign that army to a particular airship. Each airship has a different set of base stats and is useful for attacking different objectives. Once you’ve got your airship and your units, you can launch attacks on various enemies and structures. The combat is automated, with both sides health displayed as a morale bar. A unit from each team fights 1v1 until the other unit is destroyed, both sides can then constantly summon more units into battle until their morale reaches 0.
The internet is filled with thousands of MMORTS titles, with the majority offering very little but an over-powered item mall, Skylancer is totally different offering players a unique setting, in-depth mechanics and a huge variety of features. This is definitely a must-try for any RTS fans.
