Bigpoint are well known for clenching deals with some of the biggest franchises in history, recently purchasing the publishing rights to the highly anticipated Game of Thrones, adding to their previous title, Battlestar Galactica Online. The Mummy Review
The Mummy is a browser-based MMORPG game, meaning you don’t need to download any large client, you simply sign up and log in. You can choose between aligning with the Raider or Cultist factions. The Raiders follow the “good guy” archetype, similar to the group of heroes and heroins in the movies, lead by Brendan Fraser. The Cultists represent the more sinister force in The Mummy, a group of mystics that are hoping to unlock the ancient powers of Egypt for their own evil deeds. Both factions have access to 3 different classes, although on opposing teams, the classes are mirrored so they’re perfectly balanced for PvP. Personally, I went with the Enforcer as a wise man once said “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”, and Enforcer’s have the privilege of dual wielding pistols, a severe advantage over a sabre.
The first thing you’ll notice after you’ve created your character is the graphics. Despite the fact the game is a browser-based MMORPG, which is usually associated with low quality graphics and animations, The Mummy is delivered in a high quality package of great graphics, a unique soundtrack and some highly detailed combat animations. As is the industry standard in today’s MMO games, The Mummy features a very basic and fast-paced tutorial. You’re thrown into a dark dungeon and are asked to follow a number of obvious green check points. During the tutorial you’re introduced to the movement system, map and the basics of combat, before finally coming up against a huge mummy at the end. Although the tutorial is basic it does set the premise for the rest of the game, focusing around dungeon crawling, boss fights and gathering treasure.
Overall, The Mummy offers a unique browser-based MMORPG experience that combines the elements of an MMO game with the story and lore from the famous franchise. Backed by one of the fastest growing gaming portals on the internet, The Mummy is sure to explode in popularity as they will continue to release new updates and expansions after the beta period is over.
