Who actually decides how a game evolves?
There are many games out there. Some that have a fantastic story line that draws you in and other that make you want a instant refund. In this gaming world there is a common question. Who decides the story? The outcome of this answer is somewhat shocking. The gaming industry has had quite a few stars and duds. The games that have a bad story are unfortunate follies due to bad writing.
Looking at the games that have had a successful line of titles- they all have a common theme. They had a good story line basis to build their franchise upon. The games that were successful in this aspect started out with a great story and then listened to users and player feedback to build further upon the already popular tale.
With this they had a viable way to gauge what direction to take the story line in with any of the future titles. These story lines were improved through listening to users and their comments on likes, and dislikes. New features and suggested themes for the next title take players’ opinions into account.
The fact that the game developers started with a good project and ended with a huge success is nothing short of reasonable. The game developers that had a failing title could have failed for many reasons. If they were truly smart about their product then they took in to consideration the complaints and concerns of the players and improve upon the weaker points of the title.
More often than not, when a title fails there is not much room to try again. Many game developing companies completely let go of a title if it doesn’t do well on the first release.
One of the more recent titles that made a comeback fell flat on arrival was Duke Nukem. This highly anticipated title hit store shelves and then returned to those very same store shelves an few hours after being purchased. It was a disaster. It had a great franchise and history of successful titles back on older systems, but the developers didn’t add enough of a new and updated element; so it flopped.
All in all the answer to the question of who decides the direction of a game: is both. The story line of a game is written by both the designers and the players as the game evolves with future titles. This is important to the overall health and continuation of the game in its creation. So leave feedback and suggestions when a game is bad, or, when it works!
